Rose-Marie Swift has been a make-up artist for over 20 years. Her product line is gorgeous, and it has gained her a cult-like following.  Her work has been featured in such publications as Vogue, W, Harper’s Bazaar, i-D, Allure, Marie Claire, Glamour, Interview, and Elle. Her make-up has appeared in ads for Diane von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, Thierry Mugler, Esprit, Kate Spade, Tommy Hilfiger, Max Mara, The Gap, Victoria’s Secret, and more.

Her products living luminizer and the “un” cover-up are personal favorites of mine. Here she shares her well-being aha moment, why organic high-quality products are a must, and her top 3 beauty tips.

What is your well-being aha moment?

A real aha moment that also is now my background as an advocate for cleaner cosmetics came when my own health deteriorated years ago and through my research, I realized many of the chemicals that were in my body were also found throughout the beauty industry.  In fact, many ingredients are downright harmful. Sadly, the list of harmful ingredients in our personal care products is long—and we continue to use them daily. I am honestly trying to educate every woman to be more aware of, not just what they put on their skin, but also what they put in their bodies.

After many years in the fashion and make-up industry, I’ve learned a lot about the impact of daily exposure to chemicals in beauty care products. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t live up to its promises. I see the results of taking a quick-fix approach to looking good. I know first-hand the price our health can pay in the pursuit of beauty. I realized that what women need are skin care, color cosmetics, and toiletries that are as pure as possible, lines that create a solid foundation for anti-aging and long-term beauty.

Skin is a living organism. It breathes, interacts, and absorbs information from everything it encounters. It’s in constant communication with the environment. Without healthy skin, we are vulnerable to the effects of everything we encounter. Unfortunately, it is still believed that the skin acts as a barrier to the outside world, blocking out whatever was applied to it. We now know that what we put on the skin can be absorbed in the skin and in some circumstances into the bloodstream. You only need to look to medical, anti-smoking, and hormone replacement patches for proof.

What’s your favorite health food/meal?

Anything organic, raw or slightly steamed.  Clean, clean, clean food.

Take my probiotics, my homeopathic drops, and make an organic juice.  That jumpstarts my day and helps me feel energized and focused.

Tell us why you created RMS Beauty and explain what makes it so unique from every other type of make-up on the market today.

RMS Beauty is the first make-up of its kind to really live up to the word “organic.” It is becoming both an inspiration for and example of a new direction the beauty industry is taking.  Chemicals are redefining what beauty is in today’s cosmetic industry, and that is not acceptable. After seeing through advanced testing the amount of chemicals that my body had accumulated over the years via work and everyday exposure, I had to do something about it. My contribution would obviously have to be through the beauty industry.

My innovative organic cream range is not only 100% free of harmful chemicals, but it also works to heal and nourish the skin with healthy and beautifying results, truly making it “skincare with mineral color.” Selection of the highest quality raw ingredients is based on cultivation and processing criteria that sets this line apart from others. When a raw material is processed for use in cosmetics, it typically undergoes a lengthy process. I discovered the majority of ingredients used for natural cosmetics (organic or not) go through multiple steps, from deodorizing, refining, and fractionating during production, to heating to extremely high temperatures again during manufacturing. These processes render the “natural” ingredients equivalent to manmade chemicals, stripping away all beneficial nutrients and enzymes that support healthy skin and life.

RMS Beauty products, on the other hand, are formulated with raw, food-grade, organic ingredients in their natural state, from cultivation straight through to manufacturing. Organic ingredients like raw coconut and cocoa and shea butters, as well as the highest quality cold-pressed organic jojoba oil, share natural characteristics of human skin, containing some of the most powerful, nourishing, and healing properties that the skin thirsts for. These oils also have a long shelf life, lessening concerns about rancidity and free radical damage to the skin. RMS Beauty also takes extreme care to use minimal heat in the manufacturing process, thus preserving every vital nutrient that nature provides. Unlike the production process for synthetic counterparts, this technique allows natural healing and life force attributes—such as enzymes, minerals, vitamins, and most of all, anti-oxidants—to remain fully intact and naturally penetrate and rejuvenate skin. For gorgeous, modern color, I have chosen tints from pure, raw, uncorrupted, and uncoated minerals.

You are an inspirational advocate for women seeking to protect themselves from the toxic chemicals found in products they use on their bodies daily. Is that why you created the educational website—to dispel beauty myths and expose the dangers of personal care products?

Yes…a powerful, healthy woman is a well-informed woman. We must respect the vehicle we came into this world with: our bodies and our health. I launched in 2004. This website was designed with the sole purpose of educating women about some of the toxic ingredients used to make the beauty products we apply daily to our skin, and some of the health complications that can result from many years of using these products. I was overwhelmed by the response from my readers, all wanting to know which brands I’d recommend to help them achieve the look they wanted without ugly and potentially dangerous health consequences. The sad truth was that I didn’t feel comfortable making any recommendations. I soon realized we needed a beauty product that women could trust and feel safe with, a product that would preserve the integrity of the skin and make them look fabulous; not just now, but for years to come. After a few years of continued research, I have been able to formulate the ultimate color cosmetic for the health- and fashion-conscious woman.

What do you say to the many women who haven’t tried your amazing products yet, and may be under the impression that beauty products that are chemical free and organic just don’t work as well as something they have been using for years?

They need to expand their mindset and embrace the change when they are ready. Who would want to wear a daily load of synthetic chemicals on their skin? Reaching for a natural/organic product is the wisest choice you could make. You will notice a difference that will confirm your transition in a positive direction.  Just be aware that “organic is a guarantee of safety…not quality,” so make sure you choose quality brands.

Is RMS Beauty more expensive than traditional commercial nonorganic brands?

Yes, and that is due to the higher cost of the quality of ingredients I strictly choose to work with. Synthetic chemicals are cheap and easily accessible, while pure organic oils and herbs are more costly.  Well worth the investment, though, for sure.

You have created looks for some of the most famous and beautiful faces in the world, such as Gisele Bunchen, Zoe Saldana, and Miranda Kerr, to name a few. What top 3 beauty tips can you share from your famous clients?

Eyebrows frame the face and must look perfect.  Never use the same color as the hair itself—way too fake looking. I always go several shades lighter; makes the brows more real. I also draw in individual brows where they may be sparse.  Looks real.

Hands down the hero product is the living luminizer. Nothing, and I mean nothing, compares to the elegant sophistication of this dewy, glowing, youthful approach to highlighting, without the cheap glitter and bling. Another favorite is the “un” cover-up. These concealer/foundations make skin look radiant and flawless.

For eyelashes with a real wow factor, dust “un” powder on lashes between coats of RMS Beauty mascara while mascara is still wet. It helps to create a voluminous look that won’t dry out your lashes or make them brittle.

What superpower would you like to have for a day?

Mind control.

Who or what inspires you?

Everything inspires me…just depends on the mood.

What charity or cause is close to your heart?

Anything environmental. We are killing this earth and Mother Nature is pissed off.

How do you live your Vie (life/passion)?

I don’t think I have completely found that yet but I try to live by my principles and pursue a healthy lifestyle in order to be my best possible self.

What words of wisdom do you have to offer?

Less is more. You wear your skin for the rest of your life. Look after it.
