You don’t have to wait for happiness to happen. Just take a few small actions to invite more positive vibes into your life. Smile, because we’re sharing these five easy ways to get happy right away.

  1. Sing in the Shower Each Morning
Hot water melts the stress away and soothes aching muscles. Add some singing in the shower to boost your mood and increase your immunity. Choose uplifting, inspiring songs, which will help release dopamine (the brain’s feel-good-and-dance chemical), according to Psychology Today. Channel your inner Mariah or Michael Jackson. Go ahead; belt one out to start your day.
  2. Hug or Kiss Someone You Love Right Away
When you hug or kiss someone you love or even just like a lot, you boost oxytocin, the hormone that promotes bonding with others. Human beings need those relationships to feel included, supported and accepted. Like singing in the shower, smooching also floods your brain with dopamine for a natural high that is kind of addicting. Hug more. Fight less.
  3. Spend Money on Experiences, Not Stuff
A great meal, fun event, relaxing vacation or an uplifting concert can be worth more than any designer bag or expensive watch. One university study found that people who spent their money on positive and enjoyable experiences were happier than those who splurge on material goods. And, if you get quality time with a partner, family or friend, you can hug or kiss more often. (See above happy method #2.)
  4. Be Kind for the Next 10 Days
Two different studies shared by U.C. Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center have found that practicing kindness equals a significant boost in happiness in as little as 10 days. Kindness through volunteering boosts happiness, too, by increasing empathy and gratitude for your own life’s blessings. If time is short, even donating a few dollars counts, too; Vie’s partner, Sylvia Center helps children understand growing and cooking healthy food, and Charity Navigator helps rank and list charities.
  5. Write Down Your Role in a Happy Moment
Every night, write down a few things that made you happy, no matter how minor, such as seeing a fun picture on Facebook or savoring a fresh piece of fruit. Then, make a note of the role you played in that happy moment, such as writing a positive comment on the post or pausing for a second to notice the fruit’s sweetness during your busy day.

You have the power to be happy. So go on, make happiness happen.
